Bocchino and Bartmann Named SSC Players of the Week

Melbourne, Fla. – Two Lynn University student-athletes were named Sunshine State Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Cal Bocchino earns the honor for baseball with men's tennis' Kay Bartmann winning the award for the third time in his career.

Bocchino, a sophomore on the Fighting Knights squad, claims the first weekly honor of his career while Bartmann, a senior in his third year at Lynn, wins the award for the third time in his career after two accolades last season.

Bocchino hit three homers for the Blue and White in its three-game sweep over Tuskegee University, racking up a combined eight RBI. The Delray Beach, Fla., native went a perfect 5-for-5 in his official plate appearances with two three-run homers and a solo shot, adding five walks and six runs scored.

Bocchino's top game of the week saw him go 2-for-2 at the plate, with both hits being home runs while driving in six runs in the Fighting Knights 18-2 win. For the series, Bocchino slashed 1.000/1.000/2.800 with six runs scored and eight RBI. Notably, the sophomore came into the weekend 0-for-7 before breaking out of that slump in a big way.

The third-ranked Blue and White men's tennis squad opened its 2019 season last week, posting wins over St. Thomas (7-0) and NAIA No. 2 Keiser (6-1), with Bartmann picking up three victories and the top singles and doubles flights.

Against the Bobcats, Bartmann and doubles partner Florian Clemares opened up the year with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. Bartmann, the 43rd-ranked singles player in NCAA DII, followed up with a 6-3, 7-6 triumph at No. 1 singles. Against the Seahawks, Bartmann and Clemares fell in doubles action but the senior out of Stuttgart, Germany tallied a 6-2, 6-4 singles victory at the top spot.
