West Palm Beach, Fla. – After missing out on a postseason berth for the first time since 2013 last season, the Lynn University baseball team has been selected No. 8 in the 2018 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II South Region rankings in the preseason.
The Fighting Knights garnered 25 total points in the voting after posting an overall mark of 30-20 a season ago, including a 22-18 record against south region opponents. Lynn climbed as high as No. 7 in last year's national rankings, but a rough month of April dropped them out of postseason contention despite ending the season on a four-game winning streak.
On top of landing a spot in the preseason regional rankings, shortstop Patrick Dorrian was named to the Preseason All-South Region First Team by the NCBWA, joining five other Sunshine State Conference players on the list. Dorrian batted .372 last season with nine home runs, 43 RBIs and 16 doubles.
Lynn reloaded in 2018, bringing in 19 new faces while returning multiple players from last year's starting lineup. In addition to the return of Dorrian, key offensive weapons Jake Rouse, Willie Seay, DJ Daniels and Gabe Martinez also return to the Blue and White's lineup. Though the starting rotation will be revamped, the Fighting Knights' bullpen remains strong in the late innings as Daniel Nuzzi, Connor Davis and Enrique Perez look to build off last season's successes.
Delta State was slated as the top team in the region, receiving six first-place votes and 87 total points. SSC foe Tampa was chosen second with three first-place votes and 82 points, while Nova Southeastern rounded out the top three with 71 points.
Lynn opens its season on Friday, Feb. 2, at home against Delta State. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
