BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Lynn University baseball program has teamed up with local non-profit youth dance organization Boca Ballet Theatre in preparation for the group's upcoming performance.
Members of Boca Ballet Theatre were on hand for Sunday's game against Barry, as cast members joined the team on the field for the national anthem and a ceremonial first pitch. The Fighting Knights also hosted the cast for practice in the weeks prior, teaching them baseball basics such as throwing, catching and hitting.
"It was such a great opportunity for our student-athletes to interact with such great performers," said head coach Rudy Garbalosa. "It was a great experience for our guys and we enjoyed learning from each other—especially when our players tried a couple of the ballet moves. It was a sight to see."
"The Lynn baseball players generously spent their time instructing the dancers on how to throw and catch a baseball, how to hold a bat, and general baseball stances," said Boca Ballet Theatre president Vanessa Boltz. "In turn, Boca Ballet Theatre's Co-Artistic Director, Jane Tyree, gave the baseball players a quick ballet lesson. They learned how to lift a dancer and that lifting a ballerina is not as easy as it looks!"
Boca Ballet Theatre will present Play Ball! in its spring concert on April 28 and 29, 2018 at Spanish River High School's Countess deHoernle Theater. Play Ball! is a comedic ballet about baseball set in the 1940's and pays homage to "the grand ole game."
"[The dancers] witnessed how baseball players act, how they move and how they interact as a team. This was valuable information for the dancers as they prepare to play baseball in a ballet," Boltz stated. "We have invited the Baseball players to come to our studios in the next couple weeks to observe a ballet rehearsal and further give instructions to our dancers."
