Men's Basketball Defeats UPR-Mayaguez at Home

BOCA RATON, Fla.-Lynn University's men's basketball team improved to 2-0 overall with a 89-77 victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Wednesday night in the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center. Aaron Harrison and David Johnson led the Fighting Knights with  21 points and 20 points, respectively, in the Fighting Knights 14th win over the Tarzans in program history. 

 

Lynn too the lead first when David Johnson hit a jumper from just outside the paint and a layup by Aaron Harrison but UPRM answered back with a trey from Francisco Lopez to bring the Tarzans within one at 4-3. Mayaguez took its first lead at 16:59 on a layup by Jerome Caraballo to lead 5-4. The Tarzans would lead by as many as four with 7:24 remaining in the first half but the Blue & White continued to battle back and take the lead a minute later with a tip-in by Johnson. The lead changed 12 times in the opening 20 minutes but Lynn pulled ahead as the clock ticked down to lead by eight, 47-39, at the half. 

 

Harrison led all scorers in the first half with 12 points and three rebounds Johnson was close behind with 11 points. Lynn shot 50 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range. Lynn out-rebounded the Tarzans 19-14 and capitalized on 12 UPRM turnovers. 

 

Lopez was the only player to score double digits in the first half with ten points shooting 3-for-4 from behind the arc. The Tarzans shot 53.6 percent in the opening frame and 60 percent from three-point range but made just 3-of-7 shots from the charity line. 

 

Lynn came out stronger in the second half extending its lead to 16 points by the ten minute mark. The Blue & White had its largest lead of 24 at 4:49 when Pavle Raickovic had a layup to put the Knights ahead 83-59. UPRM slowly chipped away but time ran out as the Fighting Knights held on for a 12-point victory, 89-77. 

 

Harrison and Johnson both had nine points in the second half while Cory Thomas contributed eight points and a block. Lynn improved its shooting to 51.7 percent from the field in the second half and held Mayaguez to just 40 percent from the field and zero shots from behind the arc on five attempts. 

 

Thomas and Raickovic each had 10 points and three Blocks for the Blue & White while Russell Wilson had seven points, six steals, five rebounds and four steals. Lynn out-rebounded Mayaguez 37-31 and scored 38 points in the paint. The Fighting Knights also shot 50.8 percent from the field and 80 percent from the charity line in the regional matchup.
