Men's Golf Owns Leaderboard at McDonough Cup

Orlando, Fla. -  Lynn University's men's golf team ramped up its efforts to end the Fall season on a high-note by shooting a season-best 279 in the second round to grab a five-stroke lead heading into the final day of the McDonough Cup.  Elliott Whitley played a major part in the Fighting Knights success as he also holds a five-stroke lead in first place, shooting a program-best 134 over the first 36-holes.

Lynn held a lead over the first 18-holes briefly but a disappointing end to the round led to Nova Southeastern holding a three-shot advantage.  That would not happen in the second round where birdies littered the scorecards of all five starting members of the Fighting Knights.  Lynn finished nine-under par over the final 18-holes to shoot 566 as a team.  The Sharks posted a 571 with Florida Tech (580) in third followed by Florida Southern (582) and West Florida (588).

Whitley's scorecard was especially impressive.  After carding six birdies in the opening round, the Hamilton, Ontario, product sank seven more in the second round and shares the tournament lead with 13 overall.  He led the field in par 3 scoring (-3) and was second to teammate Jose Miranda in par 4 scoring (-5).  Whitley was also two-under par on par 5 holes, leading to a pair of 67 rounds.  His 134 score is three-shots better than Lynn's top 36-hole school record, set by Patricio Salem in 2009.

Miranda is tied for fourth individually with consecutive rounds of two-under 70.  The junior from Quito, Ecuador recorded six birdies to go along with four bogeys in the second round.  Keith Greene and freshman Manuel Torres each logged scores of 71 in the latter part of the day while Martin Cancino was the odd man out with a two-over 74.

Gabe Ormachea made his debut as a member of the Fighting Knights, albeit playing apart from the starting five as an individual.  He began the day with a 75 but played near mistake-free golf in the second half with 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey for an even par 72.  He is tied for 21st.along with Torres.

Lynn will be looking for its third victory at the Rio Pinar Golf Course when it takes to the links on Tuesday beginning at 9:28 a.m. on the first hole.  Fans can keep up with the action through live stats at and receive in-tournament updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
