Orlando, Fla. – Lynn University's men's golf team completed its Fall season out on top, winning the McDonough Cup for the second time in three years. The Fighting Knights set a 54-hole tournament-record with an 853 total while Elliott Whitley lost in a playoff to finish second individually.
A week after posting some of the program's highest scores, the Fighting Knights shot the seventh-lowest 54-hole total in school history. Lynn posted team cards of 287 (-1), 279 (-9) and 287 (-1) for an 11-under par 853, besting top-ranked Nova Southeastern by three shots (856) in the two-team race for first place. Florida Southern (874) held off Florida Tech (876) for third while Saint Leo (884) tied with West Florida and Tampa to give the Sunshine State Conference six teams in the top-five.
Whitley opened play on the second day in first place but bogeys on two of his first four holes would foreshadow his afternoon. He managed two birdies but also logged two more double bogeys to finish with a 76 while also closing out with a career-best 210 score.
Jose Miranda tied for fifth following a 74 on day two after hitting on two birdies over his last four holes. Keith Greene played flawlessly after bogeying his third hole. The senior from Debary, Fla., battled back with 13 pars and two birdies over his last 15 holes to finish with a one-under par 71. He tied for 10th overall.
Playing in the starting five for the first time in his career, Manuel Torres connected on four birdies and four bogeys in the final round for an even par 72. He shot a 219 overall to tie for 18th. Martin Cancino made a second consecutive four-stroke improvement, shooting a team-best two-under par 70 on the final day for a 222 total.
Gabriel Ormachea closed out his first tournament with the Blue & White tied for 31st. He posted a 75 for the second time in three rounds.
The Fighting Knights closed out the fall with one tournament victory, one runner-up finish, and two top-10 finishes.
