Melbourne, Fla. – Disastrous conditions hindered Lynn University's efforts to repeat as Titan Winter Invitational champions as the men's golf team found itself finishing second out of 14 teams in competition. Newcomer Mateo Gomez, though, won a one-hole playoff to win the individual title.
Gomez shot 71-72-78 for a 221 total before defeating Felix Aberg in a one-hole playoff. The sophomore transfer becomes the second men's golfer in program history to win the first tournament he participated in, joining Alan Fort in 1993.
Two other Fighting Knights joined Gomez in the top-10 as individual Miguel Solorzano tied for third with a career-best 222 while Keith Greene tied for 10th after posting a team-best 74 in the final round for a 225 total.
Lynn shot 900 as a team but its 300 in the third round was five shots back of winner Webber, who earned a three-stroke victory overall (897). Northwood (909) claimed third place followed by Tampa (918) and host Eastern Florida State College (920).
The Fighting Knights are back on the course on Monday, February 9, when they tee off at the Matlock Invitational at the Lone Palm Golf Course in Lakeland, Fla.
