Lakeland, Fla. – Lynn University saw three men's golfers finish in the top-10 while the team earned a third place finish out of 15 teams at the Matlock Collegiate Classic on Tuesday afternoon. Mateo Gomez logged his second consecutive top-10 finish and was joined by Keith Greene and Jose Miranda.
The trio of Gomez, Greene and Miranda posted big numbers to close out the second round and matched each other for score over the final 18 holes. Gomez logged a 69 before concluding with a 73; Greene connected on consecutive rounds of 73 while Miranda posted a team-low 68 before carding his 73.
A sophomore out of Cali, Colombia, Gomez was third among golfers in the field at eight-under par on par 5 holes and tied with Miranda and Gomez to tie for ninth with 12 birdies throughout the tournament. He also tied with Martin Cancino with 36 birdies, two off the tournament leader, and finished with a career-best 211 total.
Greene was efficient on par 4 holes, shooting three-under while Miranda was one-under par as both ended the 54-holes with scores of 213.
Elliott Whitley shot 76-76 in the second and third rounds for a 224 total and Cancino, despite his high par total, shot a 226 overall.
Tied with Barry after the second round, Lynn posted a 294 to finish with a three-round total of 858, 20 shots back of winner Nova Southeastern, which posted a tournament-record 838. Barry claimed second place with an 848. West Florida (859) did not have enough steam to overtake Lynn but held on to fourth ahead of host Florida Southern (861).
