Men’s Golf Takes Lead into Final Round of Buccaneer Invite

Miami Shores, Fla. – It was a perfect day for golf; hardly any clouds, slight breeze and great scores.  Lynn University's men's golf team turned the page on a slow morning to shoot three-under par as a team in the afternoon, giving it a four-stroke lead heading into the final day of the Buccaneer Invitational.  Elliott Whitley and Martin Cancino are ach within the top-10 and Keith Greene shot a team-low 68 in the second round.

Despite the amazing conditions at Normandy Shores Golf Club, scores were high after the first round of play with Nova Southeastern sharing the lead with Eastern Florida State at 289.  The Fighting Knights seized the opportunity and posted an 11-stroke improvement for a 281 total, giving themselves a score of 573 and four shot advantage over NSU (577) and EFSC.  Host Barry (578) is right behind in the four-way race with Central Missouri (588) back in fifth.

Whitley was never too high or too low but even keel with 24 pars, six birdies and six bogeys.  He shot consecutive rounds of even-par 71 for a 142 total and is tied for fourth.  Cancino connected on seven birdies, along with teammate Mateo Gomez, and was four-under par on par 5 holes.  He posted a 71 in the morning and 72 at the turn and sits alone in sixth place.

If there were any Fighting Knight to put the opening round behind him, it was both Keith Greene and Mateo Gomez.  The duo each shot rounds of 77 over the first 18 holes but combined to shoot four-under par over the next 18.  Greene carded a three-under 68, putting him into a tie for 13th and Gomez logged a 70 for a 147 total.

Jose Miranda was just as solid as his four teammates.  He currently leads the field with 28 pars, and scored rounds of 73-74 for a 147, sharing 20th place with Gomez.

Lynn looks to win its first Buccaneer Invitational since 2006 when it takes the course on Tuesday morning.  Fans can read more about the men's golf team at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-tournament updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
