Men’s Golf Finishes as National Runner-Up

Men’s Golf Finishes as National Runner-Up

Conover, N.C. – The week started with 20 teams and it came down to a pair of familiar faces as Lynn University's top-seeded men's golf team took on Nova Southeastern.  In the end, the Fighting Knights could not overcome a couple of tough holes and finished as the 2015 NCAA Division II National Runners-Up.  This is the third runner-up finish for Lynn in the last five years.

Mateo Gomez and Elliott Whitley dominated their opponents, Oscar Lengden and Richard Mansell, winning by a combined 13 shots.  The Blue  & White duo each shot two-under par 69s en route to gaining two points.  Whitley is now a perfect 4-0 in match play in his career at Lynn.   He won the only point for the Fighting Knights last season and went 3-0 against his opponents this year.

The national championship came down the fourth pairing of Jose Miranda and national player of the year Santiago Gomez.  Miranda led by two shots heading into the eighth hole but a lost ball and water shot gave Gomez the lead.  The two golfers exchanged shots until Miranda closed the gap to one shot with one hole to play.

Both golfers understood the national title was on the line and Gomez just missed reaching the green on his second shot.  Miranda then drew in the crowd when he clipped his third shot to the rim of the cup.  An eagle would have given Lynn the crown but the ball stuck in the lip and he settled for a birdie.  Gomez then chipped his shot to within two feet and sank his birdie putt to end the match,

Senior Keith Greene had difficulties to start the day, carding a double-bogey and bogey on his first two holes.  Another double on seven pushed him four back but he pared the last hole before the turn to gain a stroke back.  The Debary, Fla., product then shot one-under par on the back nine but still fell by two shots, 73-75.

Martin Cancino then had a chance to keep the team in the mix but two shots in the water over the last three holes allowed Nova Southeastern to take the second position 78-80.

Lynn has now finished as runner-up in 2011, 2013 and 2015 and made its eighth NCAA National Championship appearance since 2005.
