Lakeland, Florida – After a frosty morning delayed the start of the round by an hour and a half, Lynn University's men's golf team heated up over the second half of the day and sits in sixth place out of 15 teams after 36-holes of the Matlock Collegiate Classic. Manuel Torres is tied for sixth individually while Mateo Gomez is close to a top-10 finish.
Only four shots separates the leader and Torres, who locked in an even par 144 at the Lone Palm Golf Club. The sophomore shot rounds of 71 and 73 and trails co-leaders Liam Ainsworth of Saint Leo and Hunter O'Mahony from Nova Southeastern.
Gomez recovered from a disastrous opening 18-holes to fire the third-lowest round of the day, a 69, in the afternoon. He is tied for 13th with a 146. Senior Jose Andres Miranda, who has two top-10 finishes in his three years with the Fighting Knights, is just two shots back of Gomez after recording scores of 75-73 for a 148. Andres Tancred and Elliott Whitley round out the Fighting Knights contingent with totals of 151 and 162, respectively.
Lynn closes out competition at the Matlock Collegiate Classic on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Fans can keep up with the men's golf program at LynnFightingKnights.com and by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
