Gomez Ties Men’s Golf Record in Buccaneer Invite Victory

Miami Shores, Fla. – Mateo Gomez's quest to rewrite the Lynn University men's golf record books continued on Tuesday as he tied the program record for career victories by taking first place at the Buccaneer Invitational.  As a team, the Fighting Knights placed second out of 16 teams.

  • Clinging to a one-stroke lead after the first day, Lynn (850) posted a 290 as a team but fell behind winner Nova Southeastern (846) by four strokes.
  • Eastern Florida State (858) and St. Thomas Aquinas (8585) shared third place with Central Missouri taking fifth.
  • Gomez fired a 73 on the final day en route to a 208 total.  He was able to hold off a late charge from St. Thomas' Brendan Hunter and claim the one-shot victory.
  • Martin Cancino carded his second round of 70 to close out play with a 212 total and a tie for ninth place.
  • The Fighting Knights took scores of 215 from Manuel Torres, 217 from Jose Miranda and 222 out of Andreas Tancred.


  • This is the third victory of the season for Gomez and fourth of his career.  He has now tied Lynn Athletics Hall of Famer Henrik Nystrom for tournament wins in a career.
  • Gomez also logged the 11th top-10 finish of his career, tying him for eighth in program history.
  • This is the fifth tournament a member of the Fighting Knights has finished first, while the team also has two runner-up finishes.
  • Tancred was tied for fourth in par 5 scoring (-6) along with Cancino.  Gomez and Cancino tied for 11th in par 4 scoring (+2) while Gomez was tied for the lead in par 3 scoring (-2).
  • Cancino tied for fifth in total birdies with 12 and Miranda was tied for 10th with 36 pars.

The Fighting Knights will take part in the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Championship beginning on Sunday, April 17, in Key Biscayne, Fla., at the Brandon Golf Club.  Fans can keep up with the action at LynnFightingKnights.com.
