Lacrosse Improves to 5-2 with Regional Win over Young Harris

Atlanta, Ga.- Lynn University's lacrosse team improved to 5-2 overall with a 9-7 regional win over Young Harris on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Knights were led by Anthony Rainone who had a team-high 3 goals for his seventh-consecutive hat trick. Johnny Gavin dished out three assists while logging the first goal of the game and Nick Nehring earned the win in goal for the Blue & White.

Two minutes into the first quarter Gavin scored to give Lynn a 1-0 advantage and less than a minute later Sam Turner put one past Young Harris' goal keeper for a 2-0 Knights lead. YHC got one back on an unassisted goal by Chandler Bradley at 6:16 but a late goal by Rainone on a pass from Tyler Janvrin put Lynn ahead by two, 4-2, with 51 seconds left.

Austin Jerhoff logged a goal less than a minute into the second quarter to give the Fighting Knights a 4-1 lead but back-to-back goals by the Mountain Lions with make it a one goal game with 8:09 remaining in the half. Rainone scored an unassisted goal at 2:58 and added his third score of the game a minute later on an assist by Mark Snellman for a 6-3 halftime lead.

Young Harris scored a pair of goals in the opening three and a half minutes of the third quarter to bring the game to 6-5 in Lynn's favor. Jefhoff scored at the 10 minute mark on an assist by Gavin to make it 7-5. Zack Hathaway put one past Lynn's Taylor Ferrino with 5:17 left in the quarter but a minute later Janvrin answered back for the Fighting Knights for a two-goal lead once again, 8-6.

The fourth quarter was cold, with both teams only putting up a goal each. Brian Kiel scored at 7:04 and despite a late push by the Mountain Lions, Jayden Campbell was the only one able to put one between the pipes with 4:14 left.

Lynn held off Young Harris for its 9-7 victory marking the closest win in program history for the Fighting Knights. The Blue and White  was successful on all 13 clears while Vincent Genovesi and Christopher D'Angelo combined to go 15-for-19 at the face off X. Genovesi also lead the team with a game-best seven groundballs. Lynn recorded a total of 41 shots while Sean Dever made 11 saves in goal for YHC.

Gavin and Rainone each had four points in the win. Rainone's hat trick breaks his own record for hat tricks in a season while Gavin had a career-high three assists in the victory.

Lynn will have a week's rest before traveling to Lakeland for its Sunshine State Conference season opener against Florida Southern at 7 pm on Saturday, March 21.
