BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's men's soccer team opened Bobby Campbell Stadium with a 4-1 victory over Shorter University in the Wyndam Deerfield Beach Resort Soccer Classic on Friday night to improve to 3-0 on the season. Chris Hellmann continued his hot streak notching two goals in the win while Javier Mochon and Marino Jakobsson each scored their first goal of the season.
Mochon made history in the 5th minute when he scored the first goal at Bobby Campbell Stadium in men's soccer history on an assist from James Casserly. Two minutes later Lukas Zlatartis found Chris Hellmann to put the Blue & White ahead 2-0.
At the half, Lynn held on to its two-goal lead while out shooting the Shorthawks 15-0. Lynn edged SU 5-0 in first-half corners while Shorter's keeper Nicolas Ferrigno made five saves.
Hellmann fired again in the 82nd minute this time assisted by freshman Lucas Orellana. At 84:37 Shorter scored when Lucas Cavenco went one-on-one with Lynn's goalkeeper Max Schmidt. Marino Jakobsson sealed the game with a goal from 30 yards out with one second remaining in regulation for a 4-1 victory.
Lynn took nine shots in the second half, while holding Shorter to just two. Overall the Fighting Knights outshot SU 24-2. Schmidt earned his third career win in net for the Blue & White allowing one goal. Hellmann has logged his third-straight multi-goal game of the season and leads the team seven goals in three games.
Lynn returns to action for the second day of the Wyndam Deerfield Beach Resort Soccer Classic when they host Lee University on Saturday, September 13.
