Winter Park, Fla.- Lynn University's men's soccer team was handed its first loss of the season on Saturday night. The Fighting Knights lost a hard-fought battle to Rollins (4-2) in non-conference, 2-1. Chris Hellmann scored Lynn's only goal in the 75th minute as the Blue & White returns home 5-1 overall.
Lynn outshot Rollins 9-5 in the first half while the Tars edged the Blue & White 5-3 in corner kicks. Chris Hellmann had three shots, all on goal in the first half as Nicolas Mortensen had a pair of shots on goal but the duo was unable to connect as Rollins' keeper Julian Grundler made six saves in goal. At the half, Lynn and RC remained scoreless.
The intensity doubled in the second half as Rollins controlled the flow of the game for the first ten minutes of the second half but Lynn's defense was lights out allowing nothing through. In the 61st minute Alexis Martinez scored on a cross into the box from Matt Volk to give the Tars a 1-0 lead. Max Schmidt had a hand on the ball but Martinez's shot was so strong it hit the post and went in. Lynn's Nicolas Mortensen hit the crossbar five minutes later on a shot which was the first of a series of shots for the Fighting Knights, but they were unable to penetrate Rollins' defense. Grant Blackhurst scored on a throw in from Matt Volk in the 74th minute to increase the Tars' lead to two.
Less than two minutes later Hellmann scored on a rebounded shot by Mortensen to cut the deficit to 2-1. As the game played on each team battled and exchanged shot for shot until the final horn. Lynn tallied 10 shots on goal in the game holding Rollins to just two. Rollins' goalkeeper made nine saves in the Tars victory.
Lynn returns to action on Saturday, September 27, when they host Tampa in the Sunshine State Conference season opener.
