St. Petersburg, Fla.- Lynn University's men's soccer team improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in Sunshine State Conference play with a 4-1 road victory over Eckerd on Saturday night. Dominik Friedl scored his first career goal while Nicolas Mortensen notched a pair of goals. Chris Hellmann scored his 11th goal of the season and added three assists in the win.
Friedl scored in the 11th minute, on an assist from Hellmann, for his first goal of the season upon returning from injury. Lynn's 1-0 lead would hold strong until the 34th minute when Nicolas Mortensen found the back of the net with a header on a cross from Kerst Lehmann who one-touched the ball that was sent through from Hellman. Lehmann and Hellmann were both credited with assists on the goal. Lynn would hold on to a 2-0 lead at halftime, outshooting the Tritons 6-2 and holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Hellmann scored in the 61st minute after the break on an assist by Lukas Zlatartis. Hellmann went one-on-one with Eckerd's goalkeeper Alex Gott from six yards out, beating him for his league-leading 12th goal of the season. EC answered back four minutes later on an unassisted goal by Richard Ainscough in which a free kick from 25 yards out slipped past Max Schmidt in goal. Mortensen scored again in the 70th minute when Adam Hutchinson's corner kick was originally saved by Gott, but slipped through the Triton's keeper's hands. Hellmann tapped the ball to Mortensen who slipped it past the Tritons defense for a 4-1 lead.
Despite heightened pressure by Eckerd, Lynn's defense locked in and held off the Tritons for the 4-1 conference victory. Schmidt made two saves in the win while Gott turned away four of the Fighting Knights' shots.
Lynn remains unbeaten in SSC action while the Tritons fall to 0-1 in league play and 2-6 overall. The Blue & White returns to the pitch on Tuesday, October 7, in SSC action against Rollins. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 pm at Bobby Campbell Stadium.
