Lynn University Further Expands Sports Programs with Men’s Swimming

BOCA RATON, Florida - Lynn University's rapid sport expansion continues with the addition of men's swimming. Today's announcement marks the seventh sport added to the NCAA Division II Fighting Knights athletics programs since 2012 and fourth since 2016.  Lynn now has 18 NCAA varsity sports—nine men's and nine women's.

"The addition of men's swimming and our expansion of sports program offerings is significant as Lynn University continues to become a model athletics department of higher education," said Lynn's Director of Athletics Devin Crosby.

Head coach Niki Alvarez, who built the women's swimming program into a nationally recognized athletic and academic success, will take the reins of the men's swimming team and hire a full-time assistant.  The team will begin competition in the 2019–20 season.

"This is an exciting time for Lynn University athletics, the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) and our women's swimming program," said Alvarez, who will now build her third program since joining the Fighting Knights in 2012.  "This expansion adds to the storied history and culture of all the Fighting Knights programs and will further elevate our already strong women's program.  I am extremely grateful to President Ross and Devin Crosby for trusting me to build this team into a nationally competitive program."

Alvarez has led the Fighting Knights to enormous heights in a short amount of time.  Under her guidance, women's swimming has captured three NCAA DII individual national titles and 23 SSC medals while garnering 22 College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-America and nine All-SSC selections.

"Niki is an elite collegiate swimming coach," added Crosby.  "In addition, the Lynn University attributes of Spirit, Service and Strength are focal to her.  Her ability to identify talent, mentor young people and increase speed will allow the men's program to quickly achieve the same national status as our women's program."

In addition, Alvarez started and led the women's cross country program for four years and secured two All-SSC and two All-South Region selections and one individual NCAA DII National Championship appearance.

Lynn has undertaken an aggressive sports expansion over the years, adding men's cross country and track, women's track, lacrosse, women's swimming and women's cross country since 2012.
