Clemares Honored Twice, Men’s Tennis Trio Garners All-SSC Plaudits

Melbourne, Fla. – Three members of the Lynn University men's tennis team picked up 2018 All-Sunshine State Conference honors on Friday, as voted on by the league's men's tennis coaches. In singles, Jean-Baptiste Mateo was tabbed to the All-SSC First Team with Florian Clemares earning All-SSC Second Team honors. Clemares and Kay Bartmann landed on the All-SSC Doubles Second Team.

Mateo repeats as a singles first-team selection, marking the first from the program to do that since Danny Riggs in 2014 and 2015.

The senior out of Marseille, France, heads into the NCAA Regionals this weekend with a 15-3 singles record between the top two flights – including a 7-1 mark in league play -  with his 15 singles victories showcasing as a team-high. He has gone 6-2 at the top position and 9-1 at No. 2 singles for Lynn, while posting a 6-2 record when facing nationally-ranked opponents. He debuted in the singles national rankings at No. 8 and reached as high as No. 5 throughout the season. During his three-year career at Lynn, Mateo holds an impressive 51-4 singles record.

Clemares was featured at the No. 3 singles position the majority of the season for Lynn and has tallied a 14-6 singles record on the year overall. He has gone 2-2 in matches against nationally-ranked foes and held a strong 6-2 record in SSC competition.

Clemares and Bartmann did not team up as a doubles pair all year throughout the regular season until the SSC Tournament where the duo won all three of their matches, including two over nationally-ranked squads. Overall on the year, Bartmann logged a team-best 14-7 doubles record between the top two flights while Clemares went 10-10, playing at the No. 1 position in all but one match.

Clemares was also selected to the All-SSC Doubles Second Team last season with Mehdi Laalej.

Thomas Grinberg of Saint Leo is awarded SSC Athlete of the Year following a 19-0 singles record and a 15-3 double record with partner Vincent Suillerot this season. The senior from Vincennes, France, becomes the second Lion to win Athlete of the Year in men's tennis. Grinberg went 8-0 from the #1 singles and #1 doubles positions in conference play to help Saint Leo capture its second league title in three years. Currently, Grinberg is ranked No. 1 in the ITA's Division II Collegiate Rankings and, along with Suillerot, is No. 2 in doubles.

Barry University's Matias Larregina has been voted Freshman of the Year for 2018. Larregina posted a 7-1 spring record for the Buccaneers, including a 5-0 mark in SSC play. The Casa Buenos Aires, Argentina product is the ninth overall, second consecutive Barry student-athlete to claim Freshman of the Year honors in men's tennis. As of April 25th, Larregina ranks No. 68 in the ITA's Division II Collegiate Rankings.

League tennis coaches have named Saint Leo's Chad Berryhill as Coach of the Year after going 19-0 overall, and 8-0 in SSC play during the regular season. Under Berryhill's instruction, the Lions won the SSC regular season, finished runner-up in the conference postseason tournament, will host an NCAA Division II regional tournament, are No. 2 in the ITA rankings, and boasts three Top-75 singles athletes and a top-ranked doubles team. In his second year with the program, Berryhill becomes the second Saint Leo skipper to be named conference Coach of the Year in men's tennis.

Joining Grinberg as a repeat All-SSC First Team singles selection from 2017 is teammate Jaime Bueno and Mateo of Lynn University. Grinberg and Suillerot repeat as a First Team doubles pair from last year. Suillerot and Barry's Pierre Montrieul both earn First Team singles honors in 2018 after Second Team marks a year ago.
