Men’s Tennis Tied for Second in SSC Preseason Poll

Melbourne, Fla. – Lynn University's men tennis team was picked in a tie for No. 2 in the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches and announced by the conference office on Friday. The Fighting Knights return four of the six starters from last year's squad that went 17-7 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Last season, the Blue and White went 6-2 in league play throughout the regular season, earning them the No. 3 seed in the SSC Tournament. They nearly upset No. 2 seed Barry in a close 5-4 loss in the SSC Semifinals before winning the third-place match over Embry-Riddle.

The Fighting Knights then upset Saint Leo in the NCAA South Region II Championship, granting the program a berth to the NCAA National Championships for the first time since 2012.

Barry ranks No. 1 in the 2019 poll. Winners in six of the last seven SSC Tournaments, the Buccaneers received 63 total votes and seven first-place votes in this year's ranking. Lynn and Saint Leo tie for second place in the poll with 53 points apiece, however, SLU picked up the remaining two first-place votes. Embry-Riddle holds fourth place following 40 points from league coaches, while Rollins finishes in fifth with 36 points.

Barry, Lynn, and Rollins account for all eight of the SSC's men's tennis national championships. The Buccaneers have won the most recent titles (2010, 2013, & 2015), while the Fighting Knights won in 2007. The remaining four championships belong to the Tars, who last won the title in 2001.

Nova Southeastern will host the 2019 SSC men's and women's tennis championships April 25th - 27th at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Winners of each tournament will receive automatic qualification to the 2019 NCAA Division II Championships. First and second rounds for the 2019 NCAA Championships will be played at non-predetermined sites May 11th - 14th. Finals for both men and women will take place Tuesday, May 21st - Saturday, May 25th at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Nationally, the Fighting Knights open up the season ranked third by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Lynn kicks off the 2019 campaign at home vs. Saint Thomas on Friday, Feb. 1.
