Softball Splits in Final Day in Clermont

Clermont, Fla.- The Lynn University softball team concluded play in the National Training Center Tournament with a 3-2 loss to the University of the Sciences before a 10-1 five inning rout of Saint Anselm. With the split Lynn improves to 16-10.

Daniel McNeill paced the offense with four hits and Kasey Murray hit a team-high three runs batted in. Murray and Missy Montgomery both pitched for Lynn.

Lynn had the most success in its second game.  McNeill was able to jump-start the offense with a single to left center and scored three batters later on a single up the middle by Murray.

The Fighting Knights tagged another run to their lead in the fourth inning. Murray reached base on an error by the second baseman before Leanne Wright brought her home with a triple to left field. Saint Anselm (4-2) responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the same frame.

An eight-run fifth inning gave the Fighting Knights a big enough lead to finish the game early. Kochergen, Murray, Sara Vazquez, Wright, Cherise McEnery, Jasmine Campos and McNeill all contributed RBIs in the inning. Overall Lynn had seven hits in the frame.

Missy Montgomery (7-2) collected her fourth win of the month of March with a complete game, allowing one run off of four hits.

The Fighting Knights had to play from behind in game one after surrendering a run to the Devils (1-7) in the first inning, but quickly responded by scoring a run in the bottom frame off a Cherise McEnery bases loaded walk. Runs by the University of the Sciences in the second and third innings put Lynn behind 3-1.

In a last-ditch effort to spark a comeback Devin Kochergen hit a solo homerun to left field in the bottom of the seventh to bring Lynn within one.

Murray (6-7) tossed a complete game allowing three runs off of four hits with four strikeouts in the losing effort.

Sunshine State Conference play resumes on March 7, when the Blue & White host Florida Southern. To follow Lynn's softball team all season long log on to Don't forget to follow @LUknights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
