Mocs top Softball in Doubleheader

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team showed some pop in its bats but it was a little too late in a 13-3 and 4-0 loss to Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon.  Devin Kochergen moved into the top-10 in program history for home runs and runs batted in in a single season while Missy Montgomery lowered her team-best earned-run average to 1.44 in her ninth complete game of the year.  The Fighting Knights drop to 16-13 overall and 0-6 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Errors did not help the Blue & White cause in the opener as one gaffe led to three unearned runs and kept the first frame going for the Moccasins (11-7, 4-2 SSC).  Florida Southern managed eight runs in the opening inning before Lynn was able to take the field.

A 9-0 deficit was slashed to six with a three-run third inning.  Leanne Wright led off the frame with her first career home run, a monster shot over the left field wall.  Jasmine Campos used that momentum to draw a walk after sitting 0-2 in the count.  Two batters later Kochergen stepped to the plate and belted her ninth home run of the season.  She now ranks sixth in school history with 35 RBIs for a season and ninth in dingers.

Lynn's scoring would end for the day as Florida Southern added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the contest early.  Katelyn Key came on in relief of Kasey Murray and pitched 4.2 innings while allowing six runs, three of which were earned.

Montgomery was also the victim of poor fielding in game two with three second inning errors, including an inning-ender, leading to three unearned runs.  The junior hurler allowed eight hits and did not issue a walk.  She surrendered her only earned run of the day in the seventh off a sacrifice fly.

The Fighting Knights are back in action on Friday, March 14, when they travel to Melbourne, Fla., to battle Florida Tech.  Game time is set for 3 p.m. and fans can listen to the action live at or receive updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
