Softball Falls to Florida Southern

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team dropped the first of a three-game series with Florida Southern 5-1 on Friday afternoon. Crystal Cano went a perfect 2-for-2 in the loss while Missy Montgomery pitched her eighth complete game of the season. With the loss, the Fighting Knights drop to 16-11 overall and 0-4 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Trailing 5-0 heading into the final inning, Kaci Vassallo tried to jumpstart a comeback when she opened the frame with her first home run of the 2014 campaign.  Cano later notched her second hit of the day but Lynn was not able to return from its deficit.

Montgomery (7-3) looked sharp early on despite the unearned run.  She kept the Mocs at bay until some hard hits in the fifth.  She finished with nine hits allowed, two earned runs and three strikeouts.

Florida Southern (9-7, 2-3 SSC) tallied an unearned run in the second inning with a double down the right field line and later added two runs in the fifth.  Lynn's defense faltered again in the seventh, though, when an error led to a pair of unearned runs.

The Fighting Knights continue the series with Florida Southern with a doubleheader on March, 8 at 1 pm.  Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUknights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
