One Hit Wonder: Murray Leads Softball to Victory

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's softball team took the first game of the three-game series against Eckerd 2-0 on Friday afternoon, earning its second Sunshine State Conference victory of the season. Kasey Murray sparked both the offense and defense, going 2-2 at the plate with a run batted in while posting a complete game one-hit shutout in the circle. With the win, the Fighting Knights improve to 18-16 overall and 2-8 in the SSC.

The Tritons (14-15, 3-7 SSC) had their best chance at getting on the scoreboard in the opening frame when they drew a walk and earned their only hit of the day.  But Murray closed the door on Eckerd with a weak fly ball to the outfield.

It took until the fifth inning for the Fighting Knights to get on the scoreboard when a single up the middle by Devon Kochergen brought home Cydney Schmidt.  Murray then added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to score Danielle McNeill.

With her RBI in the fifth inning, Kochergen has 38 on the season, putting the senior from Madera Ranchos, Calif., one away from tying Valerie Cardinale for fifth-most in a season at Lynn.   McNeill is also tied for second in program-history in stolen bases for a season after swiping her 12th base.

Murray (8-9) threw her 11th complete game of the year. The senior from Lutz, Fla., tossed her first shutout and surrendered the fewest hits in a start. Murray had one strikeout with two walks.

The Fighting Knights conclude the series with Eckerd on March 22, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.  Fans can watch the action live at or receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
