Grand Slam Deciding Factor in Softball Loss

Clermont, Fla. – A close game ended the wrong way for Lynn University's softball team as a Southern Connecticut grand slam in the bottom of the sixth decided the contest in a 5-1 loss.

  • Lynn hit the Owls hard in the opening frame but came up empty with a pair of runners in scoring position.  
  • Leanne Wright up the Fighting Knights ahead 1-0 in the third with a sharp drive in to the left center field gap, scoring Victoria Rios.
  • Southern Connecticut State knotted the game 1-1 in the fourth when Victoria Ceballos drove home Giuliana D'Arcangelo with a two-out single up the middle.
  • The two squads exchanged goose eggs on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases but Olexa fanned BryAnna McIntosh for the second out.  After a conference in the circle, Arianna Medeiros belted the first pitch she saw over the left center field fence to put Southern Connecticut State ahead 5-1.


  • Leanne Wright went 3-for-4 at the plate with a RBI.
  • Olexa allowed five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the circle and was 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • SCSU's Medeiros went 4-for-4 with a run scored and four runs batted in.
  • Kelsey Cockrill fanned 11 batters with four walks and two hitters hit by pitch.


  • Wright accounted for half of the team's six hits.
  • Rios threw out a runner at second.
  • The Fighting Knights stranded 11 runners.
  • Lynn's game vs. Northwest Ohio was cancelled to rain.
