Melbourne, Fla. – A terrific week at the plate, coupled with a series victory over a longtime rival, has earned Lynn University softball player Kayla Sheffield Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week recognition. Sheffield paced the offense in helping the Fighting Knights take their first series over Rollins in 15 years (2003).
The Auburndale, Fla., product slashed .600/.632/1.200 in the three-game series with the Tars and logged multiple hits in each game (6-for-10). Sheffield went 2-for-3 with a home run in the opener and was 4-for-7 in the twin bill. She was the last of back-to-back-to-back home runs in an 8-2 victory and then drove in a run with a bases loaded single in the 5-1 series clincher. Her two home runs give her eight on the season, which moves her into a tie for second in the league.
In addition to her hitting prowess, Sheffield grabbed the win in the circle for the opener of the doubleheader, tossing a complete game with two runs allowed.
This is the first player of the week award of the year for the Lynn softball program and second weekly honor this season (Francais Olexa was the Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 19). The Fighting Knights have now received at least two player of the week awards in each of the past three seasons.
Lynn takes its 24-23 record to Florida Tech for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, April 26, and concluding on Friday, April 27. Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.
