Melbourne, Fla. – The spring season has started off strong for both Lynn University softball and baseball teams following the announcement of weekly awards from the Sunshine State Conference. Softball's Kayla Sheffield was honored as the Pitcher of the Week while Alec Ojeda was tabbed as Player of the Week.
A native of Auburndale, Fla., Sheffield opened the year with a no-hitter against Georgia Southwestern. She tossed seven scoreless innings with three walks and two strikeouts. The junior right-hander then tossed a complete game shutout as Lynn won 2-0 over Flagler, avenging a loss from the previous day. Against the Saints she scattered three hits over seven frames with a walk and a strikeout.
Sheffield became the first pitcher in program history to throw a no-no on opening day, the first pitcher to toss consecutive complete-game shutouts in her first two starts of the season and the first pitcher since 2010 to throw consecutive complete-game shutouts.
Ojeda pounded out eight hits in 12 at-bats, collecting two doubles, a triple and three RBI in the Fighting Knights' three games. He also proved himself a threat on the base paths, scoring five runs and stealing two bases. The senior outfielder provided both game-tying RBIs to set his team up for two late-inning victories over Bentley and Tusculum on Feb. 2-3.
In 36 career games, the Whittier, Calif., native now holds a .339 batting average and a .388 on-base percentage, racking up 42 career hits, 21 of which have gone for extra bases.
This is the first Player of the Week nod for Ojeda and the first for the Blue and White baseball program since Tom Archer won the award on March 26, 2018. Sheffield collects her second SSC weekly accolade, having been named the SSC Player of the Week on Apr. 23, 2018.
Lynn's softball team hosts St. Thomas (Fla.) in its home opener on Friday, Feb. 8, at noon while the baseball team hosts Tuskegee on Friday at 2:30 pm. Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.
