Women’s Basketball Drops Tampa in Thrilling Fashion

BOCA RATON, Fla.— Despite a 10-point deficit to start the first second, Lynn University's women's basketball team mounted a comeback and defeated the Tampa Spartans 55-54 with a last second shot  on Saturday in the Sunshine State Conference opener.

Marquis Lee led Lynn (3-3. 1-0) with 13 points including a huge bucket with less than 00:02 to play to secure the Fighting Knights' victory. Charla Nelson-James collected her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Kira Harvey also added 12 points to go along with five steals.

The first half saw four ties and five lead changes with an eight-point Tampa advantage as the biggest tilt any team could amount.

With 02:29 left in the first half and the game tied at 22, the Spartans tallied an 11-3 run to close out the first period up eight at 33-25.

To start the second half, Tampa's Kamari Smith converted on a layup to extend the Spartan tilt to the biggest of the game at 10 points with 19:16 left in regulation.

The Knights then rattled off a 13-2 run to recapture the lead at 38-35. The run started with a Harvey 3-pointer and ended on a Harvey 3-point bucket and spanned just over 05:00 minutes.

Tampa then grabbed the advantage back and looked to close out the Knights with 03:31 on the clock and up 52-46. Then with 00:31 seconds left to play, Tampa went up three on two made three throws from IllyssaVivo.

At that point, Lee put the Fighting Knights on her back and willed an LU victory. First, with 00:08 left to play, Lee converted on a jumper to put Lynn down one. Then after a Vivo missed free throw, Lee went coast-to-coast and scored the game-winner with just under 00:02 seconds to play.

Tylar Tracy added seven points on a two for five night from behind the arc. Tashina Bailey posted a season-high 10 rebounds to help Lynn out-rebound Tampa 39-29.
