Tigers Top Women’s Basketball

Colombia, S.C. – A 2-0 start to the season was dashed by a last minute run as Lynn University's women's basketball team fell 59-57 toBenedict College Monday night.  Freshman Charla Nelson-James was near dominant with 19-points, nine rebounds and two blocks while fellow freshman LaKendra Jones added 12 points and seven boards off the bench.

Benedict opened the game with a 5-0 run but the Blue & white quickly rallied behind Marquis Lee and Tylar Tracy.  Lee grabbed one of her five rebounds and Tracy knocked down a mid-range jumper to even the score at six.

It became the Nelson-James show from there as the Winter Haven, Fla.,product scored eight of the team's next 10 points to help the Fighting Knights pull away, 18-10.  Nelson-James scored 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting to help LU build a 27-21 halftime lead.

Foul trouble plagued the Lynn starting center, which allowed the Tigers to creep back into the game.  Leading 36-27 with 15:32 remaining, the Knights missed their next five shots over a five minute period before Jones knocked down a jumper in the paint to put LU back on top 38-35.

Nelson-James then committed three fouls in a three minute span to foul out with 7:09 to play.  Benedict took advantage of the gap in the paint, by attempting 11 shots in the lane and heading to the free-throw line an additional 11 times.

A four-point deficit turned into a one-point lead with 34 seconds on the clock when Jones and Tracy combined to score seven points.  Unfortunately, Lynn missed two shots in the final 14 seconds and had a costly turnover with 10 ticks on the clock.  On the ensuing play, Bridgett Williams hit one-of-two free-throws for the 59-57 Tigers' advantage.

Lee, Nelson-James and Jones combined to hit 19-of-28 (67.9%) shots from the field while the rest of the team was 7-for-38 (18.4%).  Tashina Bailey logged seven rebounds and two blocks.

The Fighting Knight return to action on Tuesday, November 22, at 5:30 p.m. when they host Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras in their home opener.  Fans can listen to the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com by selecting the Game Central icon.
