Women’s Basketball Falls to Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's women's basketball team dropped its home opener 54-51 to Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on Tuesday night.  Kira Harvey led the Fighting Knights with 17 points and Marquis Lee logged a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while adding a game-high six assists.

Rio Piedras (1-2) was able to knock down shots when it counted as it only hit 38.8 percent of it attempts but was 7-of-16 from three-point range and forced 16 turnovers.  The Jerezanas hit three of their first five three-point shots, building an 11-6 lead after nearly five minutes of play.

Head coach Niki Washington saw enough to call a time-out and the Knights battled back to take a 14-13 lead behind a trey from Harvey and three-points from LaKendra Jones.  An Amanda Nunez free-throw at 9:33 knotted the game at 14 and a lay-up 30 seconds later from Nunez put Puerto Rico ahead 16-14 and gave the Jerezanas the lead for good.

Harvey's three with 6:20 left in the first period cut the deficit to one, 20-19, but that would be as close as the Blue & White would get the rest of the night.

Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras built up its lead in the second half to as many as 11 but Harvey brought the game into single-digits with her third three-pointer of the night.  The Knights made a furious attempt at tying the game in the final two minutes.  Tylar Tracy knocked down a lay-up intraffic and Harvey hit one of two shots at the free-throw line, making it 53-51.

Jessica Baez hit one of two from the line with 17 ticks on the clock for the three-point advantage and LU couldn't find the bucket, rimming out a pair of shots in the four seconds to end the game.

Tracy logged five rebounds and a game-high three blocks and Tashina Bailey chipped in seven points, six rebounds and a block.

The Fighting Knights return to the hardwood on Sunday, November 27, at 2 p.m. when they host Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.  Fans can follow all the action live by logging on to LynnFightingKnights.com.
