Davie, Fla.—On a Charla Nelson-James put-back and then a game-ending block, Lynn University's women's basketball team defeated the Nova Southeastern University Sharks 58-56 in Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday.
After Nova tied the game at 56 with 42 seconds left, Nelson-James pulled down a Marquis Lee miss and converted on the put-back to give the Fighting Knights a two-point tilt with 21 seconds left. On Nova's attempt to tie the game at the buzzer, Nelson-James rose up to blockMeixandra Porter's shot as the clock expired.
Nelson-James totaled seven points and four blocks on the game. Lee led the Blue & White with 15 points and six boards and five assists followed by Kira Harvey with 13. Tashina Bailey posted a game-high nine rebounds and 10 points.
Lynn (9-7, 4-2 SSC) took an early lead in the first half with five-straight points to grab an early 5-0 lead at the 17:49 mark. Nova rallied to tie things up at the halfway mark of the first half at nine each.
With 7:58 left in period one, Nova took its first lead of the game, up 15-14. The scored was once again was tied at 17 before Lynn rattled off a 13-6 run to close the half up by seven.
To start the second half, the Sharks went on a 13-2 run to claim a four-point advantage with 16:20 left. Harvey then connected on a layup and a three on back-to-back possessions to reclaim the lead for Lynn with 14:34 left in regulation.
From that point on, no team would take a lead bigger than three points as the lead changed six times the rest of the game. The Knights closed out the game with one of the best defensive stands of the year to earn the win.
Lynn shot 38.9 percent from the floor and a solid 41.7 percent from behind the arc. The Fighting Knights out-rebounded Nova 41-33. For the game, the lead changed 14 times with nine ties.
The Knights' defense held Nova to 36.2 percent from the field and a 7-22 mark from downtown while forcing 14 turnovers.
