Women’s Basketball Dines on Sailfish

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's women's basketball team put on a defensive show in a 54-46 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic on Monday night.  Marquis Lee led all scorers with 17 points while Charla Nelson-James logged her second consecutive double-double, and third overall, with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  The Fighting Knights improve to 4-3 overall.

Hitting 43.5 percent of its shots in the first half, Palm Beach Atlantic (4-5) had trouble finding the basket over the final 20 minutes of play.  Lynn held the Sailfish to a miniscule 14.3 percent shooting in the second period, allowing just four field goals of which three were from beyond the arc.  In addition, the Blue & White blocked six shots and held a 40-37 advantage on the boards.

Despite the great defensive effort, LU found itself in a 17-10 hole after the first 10 minutes of play.  Jordan Kong and Selethia Jackson drained a pair of threes for PBA while Elizabeth Fugate knocked down a jumper just outside of the key.

The Knights made their way back into the game when Lee knocked down a trey from the left wing with 8:09 remaining in the first half.  Lynn went on an 11-0 run over a 4:53 span, going up 27-20, while holding PBA without a point for over seven minutes.

A flurry of baskets in the final 2:30 cut LU's advantage to four before Loren Wilkens hit four straight from the free-throw line to tie the game at 29.  A poor turnover by the Sailfish with 11 seconds on the clock gave Kira Harvey just enough time to nail a shot from the top of the key to put Lynn on top 31-29 at the break.

Kong regained the lead for Palm Beach Atlantic, 35-34, four minutes into the second half with a pair of threes and Wilkins followed with a trey of her own.  Wilkins' three would be the last field goal for PBA over the next 10 minutes while Lee would go on to score eight consecutive points to pull LU ahead 45-41.

A Fugate jumper with 5:31 left to play brought the Sailfish to within two, 45-43, but Lynn would not let them any closer, nor hit any more shots from the floor.  Three free-throws by Jackson and Ashley Dolberry would be the rest of the PBA scoring for the remainder of the contest.

In addition to Lee's game-high 17 points, she also contributed five rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Harvey chipped in 10 points, two blocks and two steals along with Nelson-James' two blocks and Tashina Bailey's 11 rebounds.

The Fighting Knights return to action on Saturday, December 10, at 4 p.m. when they travel to Miami Gardens, Fla., to battle Florida Memorial.
