Women’s Hoops Pillage’s Buccaneers

Miami Shores, Fla. – The 2013 year is starting off just fine for Lynn University's women's basketball team.  The Fighting Knights followed their 17-point victory in the first the game of the New Year with a dominating 18-point, 72-54 win over rival Barry University.  Kira Harvey led all scorers with 21 points while Charla Nelson-James added 16 points and nine rebounds.  Lynn improves to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Meeting for the 41st time, the Blue & White controlled the pace of play from the opening tip-off and never looked back to pick up their 18th victory in the series.  Harvey broke free on the right wing for a three-pointer attempt but it was Nelson-James rebound and put-back that gave LU a lead it never relinquished.

Knocking down 70 percent of its shots at one point in the opening period, Lynn was able to build a steady nine-point advantage, 23-14, following a baseline jumper by Tifani Kerrison.  The Buccaneers (7-4, 0-3 SSC) would mount a minor comeback, pulling to within three, 23-20, to force head coach Niki Washington into a 30-second timeout.

After the break, Amanda Schultz knocked down a pair of free-throws and Tylar Tracy buried consecutive threes to start the route.  Harvey closed out the half with five straight points and LU headed to the locker room on top 38-24.

Just as she had started the game, Nelson-James kicked-off the secondhalf with a basket off a pass from Harvey.  The dynamic duo combined for the next nine points as Lynn built its lead to 20.  The highlight of the night then came with 15:14 to play when Zachara Bailey lofted a perfect alley-oop to Schultz to give the Fighting Knights a 53-30 advantage.

Lynn closed out play hitting 49 percent of its shots from the field, including 41.2 percent from downtown, while holding Barry to 33.9 percent shooting.  Tracy added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals and Schultz tallied 10 points and eight boards.

Harvey now has seven 20+ point outings in 12 games this season, surpassing her total of six from all of last year.  Additionally, Nelson-James had her best shooting contest of the season, knocking down 8-of-9 attempts from the field.

The Fighting Knights return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 12, at 2 p.m. when they host 10th-ranked University of Tampa.  Fans will be able to watch the game live at LYNNFightingKnights.com and receive in-game tweets by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
