BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's women's basketball team was taken down by Palm Beach Atlantic University 61-64 in a head-to-head match-up on Saturday afternoon. Zachara Bailey led all scorers in the contest with 23 points while Sharneka McCatty noted her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Fighting Knights (8-3, 1-0 SSC) looked to get even in their second meeting against the Sailfish (7-10) after a tough loss earlier this season. Both teams came out looking sharp, quick movement up and down the court paired with precise passing kept the game level for the first period. Lynn held the advantage in shooting from the field, shooting 34.4 percent while the Sailfish shot 31.3 percent. Tifani Kerrison led LU in the attack with nine points while Bailey added eight points matching the Sailfish's highest scorer Jaz Green.
Palm Beach Atlantic put Lynn under pressure right from second-half whistle. A couple of missed shots by the Fighting Knights allowed for the Sailfish to pull away by taking a 14-point advantage, 51-37, with 10 minutes remaining. The Blue and White wouldn't allow PBA to put the game away just yet, making a late run in the final minutes of the game.
With just 1:41 left, Bailey sunk a three-pointer followed by a layup from McCatty to bring life back to the Fighting Knights, 62-60. Forced to make a play on the ensuing possession, the Sailfish fouled Bailey to send her to the line to shoot two and potentially tie the game. Unfortunately, the Blue & White guard converted on only one of the baskets, and Lynn was unable to come back before the time ran out.
Lynn shot 34.9 percent from the field while the Sailfish shot 36.4 percent. The Blue and White outshot PBA from three point range 28.6 percent to 23.1 percent.
The Fighting Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, January 8, at 5:30 p.m. hosting Nova Southeastern as they begin to play the bulk of their Sunshine State Conference schedule.
