PENSACOLA, Fla.-Lynn University's women's basketball showed they are not a team to be taken lightly, defeating 12th-ranked Delta State 65-63 in Saturday's contest at the Comfort Inn Tip-Off Classic. Zachara Bailey led the Fighting Knights putting down 21 points while Tylar Tracy notched her second consecutive game scoring in double-digits with 15 points.
The Blue and White came ready to play, pressing DSU right from the whistle. Bailey sunk back-to-back three-pointers early, giving Lynn the confidence it needed to take shots from the outside.
LU controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, keeping a steady lead over the Lady Statesman to end the period 33-27.
Delta State went on a rally after the break, forcing the Fighting Knights to get up and down the court to defend. Lynn held Delta State with the help of Charla Nelson-James, who had five rebounds and two steals, and Sharneka McCatty, who notched seven rebounds and 10 points over the Lady Statesman.
Delta State kept it interesting by cutting the deficit to three points, trailing 60-57 with three and a half minutes to play. Excellent defending by Bailey forced the fifth foul on guard Chelsey Rhodes sending her to the bench for the remainder of the game. Bailey put down both of the free throws to give Lynn a five point cushion 62-57. She went 8-of-11 in free throws overall.
The game would not end without a fight, the Lady Statesman came back putting the LU under pressure but were unsuccessful falling 63-65 to the Fighting Knights.
Lynn shot an impressive 78.4 percent from beyond the arc and 38.5 percent from the field.
