Buzzer Beater Dooms Women’s Basketball

BOCA RATON, Fla. – With the game looking as if it would go into overtime, Eckerd nailed a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to drop Lynn University's women's basketball team 54-51 in the regular season finale.  Tylar Tracy scored a career-high 21 points and was joined in double-figures by Zachara Bailey, who notched 14.  The Fighting Knights head into the Sunshine State Conference Championship as the No. 7 seed with 11-15 overall record and 4-12 mark in the league.

Trailing 51-47 with 45 seconds remaining, the Blue & White were able to catch a break when Ivana Grbic turned the ball over with 25 on the shot clock.  Bailey made the Tritons pay for the mistake, driving to the basket to earn the lay-up and one.  She knocked down the ensuing free-throw to knot the game at 51.

Eckerd (11-15, 4-12 SSC) let the game clock trickle down to six before Rana Thomas attempted a three from the left corner but the shot rattled off the back of the rim and Kayla Bowlin picked up the board.  Bowling quickly turned to Thomas in the corner for the buzzer beater.

The Fighting Knights led by as many as nine points in the second half.  Tracy and Bailey converted on a lay-up and then drained a three before Anna Ozolina put-back a missed attempt to give Lynn a 38-29 advantage.

Tracy started to head up late in the half to help the Fighting Knights erase a six-point deficit, 17-11.  The junior guard slashed to the lane on several occasions to draw fouls and pick up shots at the free-throw line.  She then nailed two shots from beyond three-point range to give her 13 points and put her team up 31-25 at the break.

Eckerd (11-15, 4-12 SSC) was able to jump out to the early lead behind some solid passing and shots in the paint.  The Tritons picked up 14 first-half points in the paint as they built a 17-11 lead.  In addition to Tracy's shooting, Zachara Bailey also picked up her pace on the field, knocking down a pair of big treys late in the period.

Tracy was 5-of-9 from the field and 9-of-13 from the charity stripe.  She also led the team with seven rebounds and two steals.  Sarah Ammons led Eckerd with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Lynn shot 32.7 percent from the field, 26.3 percent from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent at the line compared to Eckerd's 35 percent from the hardwood, 26.7 percent from three-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 at the line.  The Tritons also led 40-35 in rebounds.

The Fighting Knights are back in action at the Sunshine State Conference Championship hosted at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Fla.  They will be squaring off against No. 4 seed Saint Leo on Wednesday, March 5, at 2:30 p.m.  Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
