Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's women soccer team played its second consecutive double-overtime match on Wednesday, this time falling 2-1 against Saint Leo in its Sunshine State Conference opener.  Tatiana Peganos scored her first career goal and Meghan Dolan stopped nine shots.  The Fighting Knights drop to 0-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the SSC.

Jackie Hellett had the first scoring opportunity of the match after breaking through for a one-on-one minutes into play but keeper Abbey Evans made a diving stop.  Unfortunately, Stephanie Marran put home the first goal of the match at the 4:56 mark with a header off an Adrianna Johnson cross from the left sideline.

Saint Leo (2-3-0) was able to outshoot Lynn 11-8 in the first half despite LU holding much of the possession.   However, the Fighting Knights stepped up their offense, putting pressure on the Lions in the first 20 minutes of the second half.  That aggressiveness paid off in the 72nd minute when Penagos stole the ball in the middle of the field and launched a 35-yard bomb to the upper left corner to knot the game at one.

Lynn's defense had some lapses in effectiveness towards the end of regulation as the Lions were able to put forth a barrage of shots within the LU 18-yard box.  Rio Hanlan and Paige Meggison  stopped SLU's attempts while Dolan made a pair of impressive goal-line saves to force overtime.

In the first overtime period, it was Lynn's offensive that showed it wanted it more.  The Blue & White nearly ended the game three minutes in, when they had a four on three chance, but Jackie Hellett missed left.   Later, Kirstie Schults broke free of the Saint Leo defense but Evans made her 13th save of the afternoon to keep the game tied.

Lynn drew to a 2-2 tie against Flager on Sunday but did not make it through the full 110 minutes today as Ari Foreman lobbed a shot from the far left wing over Dolan's head 58 seconds into the second OT for the game-winner.   Foreman and Marran combined for 12 of the Lions' 23 total shots.  Lynn attempted 20 shots.

The Fighting Knights return to the pitch on Saturday, September 15, when they host Rollins at 1 p.m.  Fans can watch the game live at LynnFightingKnights.com and don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
