Late Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Soccer

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's women's soccer team could not manage a two-goal deficit, falling 2-1 to rival Barry University on Wednesday afternoon.  Tatiana Penagos scored for the second consecutive game and Kelsey Butler stopped six shots in goal.  The Fighting Knights drop to 4-8-2 overall while Barry improves to 7-6-1.

Scout Stowe nearly gave the Blue & White an early advantage within the first moments of the match after Kirstie Schults' initial shot deflected off the chest of BU keeper Becca Rogers.  Stowe came crashing in at the left post but her contested shot sailed high on the open net.

Barry was able to capitalize on its first opportunity, though, as Sara Karna scored in the seventh minute from a shot inside the box to the left post.  The Buccaneers added their second goal just four minutes later on a near identical play with Lauren Manna finding the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

Lynn came out firing on all cylinders in the second half with the two-goal deficit.  Schults was turned away by Rogers in the 52nd minute and again in the 67th minute before Penagos finally put LU on the scoreboard.

Stevie Jones started the play with an all-out hustle effort on the right sideline, losing possession of the ball before fighting back for control.  The ensuing cross landed at the feet of Penagos, who then turned to her right and ripped a shot to the left side-netting for her third goal of the season.

Penagos had two more scoring chances late in the match but each attempt missed just left of its target.

Lynn out shot Barry 16-11 and edged the Bucs 1-0 in corner kicks.

The Fighting Knights close out the regular season on Saturday, October 27, at 1 p.m. when they host Florida Tech at FAU Soccer Field.  Lynn will also honor its senior class, Kelsey Butler, Rio Hanlan and Stevie Jones.  Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.  Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
