Hellett, Martin Lead Women’s Soccer Past Rivals

Miami Shores, Fla. – A goal by Jackie Hellett in the 60th minute broke a 1-1 tie and carried Lynn University's women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over rival Barry on Wednesday afternoon.  Linzi Martin scored her second goal of the season but it was Hellett's third career game-winner that helped the Fighting Knights improve to 2-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.

The matched looked as though it would go in Barry's favor after the Buccaneers (3-2-0, 1-1-0 SSC) scored within the first two minutes of play.  Lauren Manna grabbed a pass from Emma Karp and locked in her shot to the top right corner from inside the box.

It didn't take long for LU to respond, though.  In the 16th minute of play the Blue & White went on the attack with Lauren Handley serving up a cross from the right flag.  Bucs' keeper Becca Rogers punched out the ball past the 18-yard box where Martin eyed the goal.  The freshman midfielder didn't skip a beat and fired off a shot that looped over Rogers to knot the game at 1-1.

Lynn continued with their chances against Barry as reigning SSC Offensive Player of the Week Kirstie Schults nailed two attempts on net but Rogers was able to turn away both shots.

All of the Fighting Knight's hard work paid dividends in the second half.  Lina Forsman won a gritty foul near the top left corner of the box and Handley served up a perfect ball inside the six-yard box on the ensuing free kick.  Both Hellett and Schults fought for the loose ball but in the end it was Hellett who poked in the game-winner.

Barry held a 19-15 advantage on shots but the Bucs managed only three attempts on net.  Conversely, Lynn saw nine of its 15 shots reach target.  Rogers stopped seven shots while Meghan Dolan earned two saves.
