BOCA RATON, Fla. – Wednesday night's matchup between Lynn University and Barry was a game not seen since the early days of the rivalry with the Fighting Knights edging out the 12th-ranked Buccaneers 5-4 in overtime behind a hat trick from freshman Emily Weisberg. Donish Cole and Caroline Duerr also scored for Lynn, which improves to 1-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The match looked as it may get out of control early as Barry (5-2-0, 1-1-0 SSC) pounded away two goals within the first 10 minutes of play. But a goal from Duerr in the 17th minute brought new life to the Blue & White and a goal by Cole in the 28th minute led to a 2-2 game at the break.
Weisberg stole the show in the second half with a perfectly placed free kick into the back of the net for her first career goal in the 48th minute to give Lynn its first lead 3-2. But Shanice Robe and Lavinia Nkomo connected on two goals, the last coming in the 71st minute to put Barry back in the lead.
The Fighting Knights, though, drew a penalty kick in the 85th minute, which Weisberg buried to send the game into overtime. Four and a half minutes into OT, Lynn drew another PK and the freshman defender came through in the clutch to give her team their first win over Barry since 2012 and first victory over a ranked opponent since 2011.
The Fighting Knights have their bye week this weekend and return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 30, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Nova Southeastern.
