SSC Championship – Day 1 in the Books for Swimming

Clearwater, Fla. - Lynn University's women's swimming team had a great start to the Sunshine State Conference Championship and is tied for fourth after the first day of competition.  Sarah Hughes medaled in the 200 individual medley, her fourth career SSC Championship medal.

  • Evening Session
    • The Fighting Knights saw four individuals qualify for the night swim: Catalina Berraud-Galea (1000 freestyle), Hughes (200 IM), Samar Khacha (200 IM) and Karolina Smylek (200 IM).
    • Berraud-Galea (10:23.76) placed seventh in the 1000 free, tapping the wall with an NCAA 'B' cut time.
    • Khacha and Smylek qualified for the 'B' finals of the 200 IM.  Smylek was third in the B final with a time of 2:06.69 and Khacha seventh after being timed at 2:07.68.
    • Hughes was the big winner for Lynn, placing third in the 200 IM 'A' final with an NCAA B' cut time of 2:02.10.  She beat her prelim time by three seconds.
    • The Fighting Knights 200 medley relay A squad (Smylek, Hughes, Clara Monges and Alyson Currao) finished fifth (1:44.60) while the B squad of Laia Coma, Grace Armit, Sarah Nichols and Tatiana St. Juste placed sixth with a time of 1:49.73.
  • Morning Session
    • Monges (24.64), St. Juste (24.81), Currao (24.95) and Coma (25.15) all competed in the 50 free.
    • In addition to Hughes, Khacha and Smylek in the 200 IM, Savanna Suggs (2:26.35) and Shelby McKeever (2:27.42) also participated.
    • Susan Faremouth was clocked at 10:53.70 while Aliah Maginley posted a 11:14.94 mark in the 1000 free


  • This is Hughes' first SSC medal in the 200 IM.  She has previously won silvers in the 400 IM (2017 & 2018) and a bronze in the 200 breaststroke (2018).
  • This is the 28th medal in school history.
  • 200 IM personal-record times: Smylek, Khacha and Suggs.
  • 50 Free PRs: Monges, St. Juste and Coma.
  • 1000 Free PRs: Maginley.
