BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's fifth-ranked women's team traveled to Division I foe Bethune-Cookman on Sunday, easily winning 7-2 to remain perfect against the Wildcats. With the win the Fighting Knights improve to 3-0.
Doubles action went in Lynn's favor, as the visitors were victorious in two of the three to take the lead before the intermission. In the second flight, Valentine Confalonieri and Carolina Cuevas won 6-2 over Chinatsu Kajiwara and Gaby Chinchilla before BCU evened the match in the top slot by defeating the duo of Rosalie Willig and Grace Mpassy 2-6. The Fighting Knights were able to retake the lead on the third court where Martina Gledacheva and Alina Jane prevailed over Alejandra Vidala and Maria Garoz-Mareno 6-3.
The Blue & White dominated in singles play en route to the victory. Top-ranked Confalonieri, familiar with playing against Division I opponents after qualifying for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships the past two seasons, cruised to 6-2, 6-2 result over Matsuba. In the second flight, 23-rd ranked Willig put Lynn up 3-2 after a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Kajiwara. The match was sealed in the fourth flight when Gledacheva prevailed 6-1, 7-5 over Chinchilla.
For the first time this season, Lynn lost a singles bout as Mpassy fell 3-6, 5-7 to Garoz-Mareno in the three spot. On court six, Cuevas won the first set 6-1 before having to win 7-4 in a tiebreaker to take set two 7-6. The final match to finish was Jane in the five slot, who after splitting the opening two sets 6-0 and 6-7, won the tiebreaker point with a score of 10-6.
The Fighting Knights get to rest before the first challenge of the season, as 15th-ranked Valdosta State comes to town on February 14.
