BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's fifth-ranked women's tennis team showed why they are ranked so high on Saturday, besting 15th-ranked Valdosta State 8-1 at home. With the victory Lynn improves to 4-0 on the season.
Valdosta State (3-1) started down 1-0 with the third doubles match going to Lynn by forfeit, but the score was tied after an 8-3 victory at the top doubles spot by Jennifer Rink and Anke Poncelet of the Blazers over Rosalue Willig and Grace Mpassy. Lynn quickly retook the lead with an 8-5 result in the second doubles slot by Vale Confalonieri and Carolina Cuevas over Bea Morales and Joanna Lario.
In singles play Lynn earned another point before any serves by forfeit in the six spot. Mpassy put the Fighting Knights one score away from victory with a 6-4, 6-2 sweep over Lario on court three. Confalonieri, the top-ranked player in Division II, took the first set of her match against Morales 6-3 before being forced into a third set with a 4-6 setback. In the third set Confalonieri cruised 6-1 to clinch the win.
In the bottom draw, Martina Gledacheva dominated Poncelet in the fourth slot 6-3, 6-1. The final match to finish was a 6-1, 6-1 rout by Cuevas over Taylor Vinge.
