Saint Leo, Fla. – Lynn University's fifth-ranked women's tennis played in their Sunshine State Conference opener on Sunday, losing 6-3 to third-ranked Saint Leo. With the loss Lynn falls to 4-1 overall, 0-1 in SSC play.
The first two doubles matches finished back-to-back, with Lynn's dup of Carolina Cuevas and Valentine Confalonieri cruising to an 8-2 victory over Gabrielle Paul and Marine Beurge-Guyot on court two, while Saint Leo's (3-1, 2-0 SSC) Isabella Robbiani and Maria Benkirane won by an identical score over Grace Mpassy and Rosalie Willig at the top spot. With a tied score, the Lions were able to head into the intermission on top ad Anastasia Wagner and Pauline Helgesson defeated Lynn's Martina Gledacheva and Alina Jane at the third position.
Lynn trailed 3-1 early in singles action as Confalonieri withdrew in the second set of her match at the top spot. 20th-ranked Willig and Gledacheva both swept their opponents with scores of 6-3, -2 and 6-1, 6-1 to tie the score.
Saint Leo took the lead again on court five as Beurge-Guyot bested Cuevas 6-2, 6-3 1, Mpassy fell in the third slot 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the win for the Lions. Jane finished the day in a three-set bout, falling 6-1, 7-6, 10-6.
