BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's women's tennis team improved to 11-1 overall after taking down the defending NAIA National Champion Georgia Gwinnett, 8-1, on Tuesday. The fifth-ranked Fighting Knights took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and swept singles action to secure the victory as GWC falls to 2-3 overall.
Martina Gledacheva and Carolina Cuevas gave Lynn a 8-0 victory over Chiara Di Salvo and Pinones Haltenhoff at the No. 3 sport for a 1-0 lead. Grace Mpassy and Kim Przeszlowski then blanked Victoria Svensson and Luma Schwab 8-0 at the middle spot for a 2-0 lead before Lynn's Vale Confalonieri and Rosalie Willig lost 9-7 to Valeria Podda and Laura Wehner at the top spot.
Gledacheva defeated Wehner in straight sets of 6-0 for a 3-1 Lynn advantage at the No. 3 singles spot and Willig followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the second spot of Lynn's lineup over J. Van Fraaijenhoven. Confalonieri's 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Podda at the top of the lineup secured the Blue & White's victory.
Cuevas won at the fourth spot of Lynn's lineup in identical sets of 6-3 at No. 4 singles while Mpassy made it a 7-1 Fighting Knights lead with an 8-1 win over Svensson at the bottom of the lineup. Jane won 5-4 by retirment at the No. 5 spot for a 8-1 final.
