BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's fifth-ranked women's tennis program defeated the No. 3 team in the NAIA, Auburn Montgomery, in a 6-3 decision on Tuesday night. The Fighting Knights trailed 2-1 after doubles play but rallied in singles to take the win and improve to 13-2 overall.
Valentine Confalonieri and Rosalie Willig took home the only doubles win at the No. 1 spot in an 8-0 match against No.5 Paula Diaz and Anna Rudolfova. AUM's seventh-ranked Claudine Maheu and Alice Baudeigne defeated Alina Jane and Martina Gledachea in a close 8-6 matchup at the No. 2 doubles slot to make it 1-1. Grace Mpassy and Carolina Cuevas fell 8-6 at the bottom of the doubles lineup to Celine Lenertz and Kelley Southwood.
Willig cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over 21st-ranked Diaz to even the score 2-all. Cuevas won her first set 6-2, but then fell 6-2, 6-3 in her next two sets to lose at the No. 3 spot to No. 33 Southwood. Top-ranked Confalonieri had a tough first set but won 7-5 and then 6-4 to defeat No. 6 Baudeigne at the No. 1 singles spot making it a 3-3 match.
Gledacheva won in consecutive sets of 6-4 over 36th-ranked Maheu as the No. 4 singles player and Mpassy cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Rudolfova at No. 6 to clinch the win and lead 5-3. Jane's 6-3, 6-2 win over Lenertz at the fifth spot sealed the victory 6-3.
AUM falls to 14-3 overall while the Fighting Knights win puts them back on track with their second straight win and set to host No. 9 Rollins on Sunday, March 29. First serve is set for 2 pm at the Perper Tennis Complex.
