BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's women's tennis team (14-2, 3-2 SSC) defeated No. 38 Rollins 9-0 on Sunday morning at the Perper Tennis Complex earning its third Sunshine State Conference win of the season. The Fighting Knights improve to 33-4 all-time against the Tars.
Martina Geldacheva and Grace Mpassy blanked Fabina Vitanza and Emma Wookey 8-0 at No. 3 doubles to give the Blue & White a 1-0 lead. Lynn's 15th-ranked duo of Valentine Confalonieri and Rosalie Willig took down Shannon Etten and Carli Davis 8-3 for a 2-0 lead and Alina Jane and Carolina Cuevas beat Johanna Olsson and Zoe Monge 8-6 to complete the doubles sweep.
Cuevas beat Olsson 6-3, 6-0, for a 4-0 Knights lead and seconds later Mpassy won 6-2, 6-0 over Monge to clinch the Blue & White's victory. Gledacheva's 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles made it a 6-0 lead for Lynn and No. 2 Confalonieri beat out 32nd-ranked Etten at the top of the line up to put Lynn ahead 7-0.
No. 26 Willig was ahead after winning her first set 6-2 over Davis but the Tar would not go down without a fight bringing the second set to a 5-4 score with a slight Willig advantage. The sophomore from Stuggart, Germany, however held off her opponent to win 6-4 in the set earning the victory and putting Lynn one point away from sweeping Rollins. Jane sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Wookey at the No. 5 singles spot.
