Miami, Fla.- Lynn University's sixth-ranked women's tennis team fell to 4-3 in the Sunshine State Conference after falling to No. 2 Barry (14-1, 5-0 SSC), 7-2, in league play Thursday afternoon. The Fighting Knights move to 15-3 overall and 40-14 all-time against the Buccaneers.
Barry took a 3-0 lead after sweeping the Fighting Knights in doubles play. No. 15 Valentine Confalonieiri and Rosalie Willig fell 8-2 to ninth-ranked Sonja Larsen and Ana Pain at the top of the lineup. Alina Jane and Carolina Cuevas dropped at the No. 2 spot, 8-3, to Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker. Grace Mpassy and Martina Gledacheva would not go down without a fight but fell by a point, 9-8, to Elisabeth Abanda and Jasi Witherspoon at No. 3 doubles completing the Bucs doubles sweep.
No. 6 Larsen made quick work of Cuevas at No. 2 singles for a 4-0 BU lead in two sets of 6-1 wins. Gledacheva fell 6-3, 6-3, to Pain at the No. 4 spot which secured the victory for Barry and 27th-ranked Fritschken beat Jane 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 3 singles spot for a 6-0 Bucs lead. Mpassy's 6-3, 6-2, win over Twelker at No. 5 singles scored the Blue & White's first point.
No. 26 Willig played at the top of the Fighting Knights lineup and took her first set 6-4 over Abanda. Abanda evened the match and forced a third set with a 6-4 win and went on to beat Willig, 12-10, to make it a 7-1 BU lead. At the sixth spot, Kim Przeszlowski took the first set 6-3 over Witherspoon but dropped the second set 6-4. Przeszlowski went on to win the deciding set 10-6 to bring the final score to 7-2 in the Bucs favor.
