BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's sixth-ranked women's team eliminated fifth-seed Rollins from the Sunshine State Conference Tournament with a 5-0 victory on Thursday afternoon. The Fighting Knights, who earned the #4 seed, will face No. 1 seed Barry at 2:30 pm in the semifinals on Friday, April 24.
"It was a good match as Rollins is always a quality team," said head coach Michael Perez. "We look forward to the challenge that is ahead."
The Fighting Knights took an early lead in double action. A slight weather delay halted play for an hour but the Blue & White lost no momentum sweeping doubles to lead 3-0. 15th-ranked Vale Confalonieri and Rosalie Willig defeated Shannon Etten and Carli Davis, 8-4, at the No. 1 doubles spot. Lynn's No. 2 duo of Alina Jane and Carolina Cuevas took down Johanna Olsson and Fabiana Vitanza 8-5 while Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy blanked Emma Wookey and Zoe Monge 8-0 to complete the sweep.
Gledacheva's 6-0, 6-1 win over Taylor Brown to put the Fighting Knights within one point of victory and No. 26 Willig defeated Davis 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles spot to secure the 5-0 win.
No. 2 Confalonieiri was up a set over #32 Etten at the top of the lineup while Cuevas, Jane and Mpassy also won their first sets against the Tars.
Lynn will take on No. 2 Barry (18-1) at 2:30 pm in the second round of the SSC Tournament hosted by Saint Leo on Friday. Live video and stats are available at LynnFightingKnights.com.
