BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn university's seventh-ranked women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division II South Region Finals for the 19th-consecutive season following a 5-0 win over No. 5 Nova Southeastern (18-3) in the South Region #1 Semifinals on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Knights improve to 18-4 overall and will face West Florida (24-3) at 10 am on Monday, May 4.
Lynn took a 3-0 lead with a sweep in singles action. Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy put the Blue & White on the board first with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Sixth-ranked Valentine Confalonieri and Rosalie Willig defeated Petra Jurova and Irina Constantinide, 8-5, at the top of the lineup for a 2-0 lead. Alina Jane and Carolina Mpassy then completed the sweet with an 8-6 win over Alexandra Johansson and Alex Kaeser at the number two spot.
Jane put the Fighting Knights within one point of advancing when she beat Johansson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Second-ranked Confalonieri took down No. 16 Sabrina Kierberg, 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match victory at the top of the singles lineup.
In the 19 years Lynn has been in Division II the Fighting Knights have reached the South Region Finals each time, winning 16 of those appearances advancing to the national championship. The winner of Monday's South Region #1 Final between Lynn and UWF will punch a ticket to the NCAA DII Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz., May 13-16.
