BOCA RATON, Fla.- It has been a two-year hiatus for the Lynn University women's tennis team at the NCAA Division II National Championships but the Fighting Knights will return this season following a 5-4 win over No. 4 West Florida (25-4) in the South Region #1 Final on Monday afternoon. The fifth-seeded Blue & White took down top-seed UWF winning four singles matches to clinch the victory.
Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy gave Lynn a 1-0 lead with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. No. 8 Monika Kochanova and Laure-Eline Faure evened the match at 1-1 with an 8-4 win over sixth-ranked Valentine Confalonieri and Rosalie Willig. No. 2 doubles went into a tiebreaker where Alina Jane and Carolina Cuevas lost 9-8 (7-3) to Fernanda Amaral and Nina Bubelova giving UWF a 2-1 lead through doubles.
Mpassy's 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 6 singles over Sarai Flores evened the match at 2-2. A loss by Cuevas to Kat Dikosavljevic 6-1, 6-4 at the number three spot once again gave West Florida a one-point advantage in the match. No. 8 Faure took down No. 2 Confalonieri in consecutive 6-2 sets to put the Argos within one point of clinching victory. Jane defeated Bubelova 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles for Lynn to trail 4-3 overall.
After both No. 28 Willig and Gledacheva lost their first sets, they each battled back winning set two. Willig went on to defeat No. 19 Kochanova 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 tying the match 4-4. Gledacheva dropped her first set to Amaral 4-6 but after trailing 3-0 in the second set she went on to win six consecutive games for a 6-3 win in set two. A penalty for Amaral gave Gledacheva a 1-0 lead at the beginning of the deciding set in which she went on to win 6-3 clinching the victory for Lynn.
This marks the 17th time in 19 years that Lynn has advanced to the NCAA National Championships and first time in three seasons. The Blue & White (19-4) heads to the NCAA Tournament in Surprise, Ariz., May 13-16. Also advancing from the South Region is Barry who defeated Saint Leo 5-0 in the South Region #2 Final on Sunday.
